We haven’t had any major injuries for a while. Dan came off his bike this week from a slippy drain cover at Mitchitson Road polo court during throwins…
A few quotes from the polo forum to get a flavour of what actually happened:
found myself just editing the League blog…. and news just in from Dr Chukk…
from Golden wheel:
“He slipped out on a muddy drain cover at mitch. Xd up bars and went down hard. We had to call for an ambulance. Vidal waited with him, but only so he could get on the gas! Dan was cool as could be.”
“Cheers everybody, and a massive thank you to everyone who helped me out last night. You are all lovely people.
The thumb is broken, got a cast on it and an appointment at the fracture clinic this morning. Bummer.
Disappointingly didn’t get any gas in the ambulance as he couldn’t find some kind of attachment for the canister, “good job you’re not in screaming agony” he quipped. Yes, I though, good job. I did get my heart rate tested which was in the 40′s which had them worried but then they just figured I was really fit, like some kind of superhero.”
“Just got back from the hospital where the nice men tied surgical tape round the end of my thumb to make a strap which one of the pulled full-on hard outwards along the length of my thumb whilst the other pushed it sideways into place, properly mauling it in. Nice. Seems to have done the job though. Thank Jesus for local anesthetic.”
“It’s the least I could do for such a fine chap.”
Heal up Dan.
From Todd of Cosmic:
At the Northgate pub on Southgate Rd, an empty place on the top shelf remains where one of polos greatest polo prizes used to perch.
Who could’ve done such a thing?
Rumors are circulating within the London polo community and it seems another player is responsible!!!!
This could break friendships and divide communities.
If the trophy is not returned within 20 days, a reward will be issued for the wheels and mallet of the person responsible.
Cosmic have set about creating a curse which will cause great damage.
Do not make eye contact with the trophy.
The gods are not happy.
The thief has put a price tag on ebay…
Either way i hope the trophy and the team are reunited.
In we go to our magic time machine…
About a year+ ago Yorgo started going on about “In New York they…
…use clips and straps.
…have them a bit softer.
…say: I will never support a system that doesn’t involve throwing mallet. I like it. It’s a ritual of chaos and danger that attracts curiosity and lends a twisted whimsy to our game. The act of chucking my mallet into the fray of other rods of aluminum hurling through the air while trying not to hit my friends riding below is a physical and graphic release that cannot be replicated by a clinical paper form. If danger is what you’re afraid of, you shouldn’t be playing bike polo. The mallet toss is a ritual, elementally. And that’s important.
…have team nights on thursday”
you get the picture.
MAX got some stickers made about a month ago…
and then at sunny South London Polo…

As if you haven’t done enough bike socialising already this week…

Saturday 1st December – somewhere around Brick Lane. Fixed Gear London and Roxy are throwing a party and screening the much talked about film MASH. This has been in making for a couple of years now and if the trailers/hype is anything to go by should feature everything you would normally expect in a film about fixed gears but with fancier photography and a better soundtrack. Ok that’s not selling it that well but its meant to be really good. Check out http://www.mashsf.com/ for more on the film.
Details are scarce about the Saturday showing but drop Andy an email at andyfgldn – gmail.com if you want to know more and find out how to get in. Word is there will be film, beer, some sort of competition (think tricks) and maybe even popcorn.
On the subject of films – check MT’s post about messenger films which didn’t make it to London’s BFF this year…
Last Sunday’s polo was wonderful, despite the onslaught of cold winter there was a great turnout – see it in Robb’s photos.
Yorgo just came back from Tokyo and brought this with him…
The basic idea is that – Pista + Sumo = PISUMO:
- you create a big circle of riders holding their bikes (6-7 meters wide)
- then 2 riders at each time get into the circle
- 3 laps in one direction, then START!
- from then it’s like footdown (whoever touches the ground first loses), but with only 2 people.
- you make sumo noises
- If you exit the circle you’re out
See Robb’s photos again for an idea of what it looks like on Brick Lane or watch this…
Anyway see on Sunday and I hear there is going to be a barbecue so bring food to grill!
